Frequently Asked Questions

What is LAB?
LAB (Lonely, Awkward, and Bored) is a peer-led community offering connection, play, and personal growth in a judgment-free space. It provides a structured yet flexible alternative to traditional 12-step groups, focusing on embracing the mundane, overcoming social anxiety, and fostering meaningful relationships.

Is LAB anonymous?
Yes! Anonymity is a core value of LAB. Members are free to share as much or as little as they feel comfortable with, and personal details are never required. We believe in creating a safe space where everyone can be themselves without fear of judgment or exposure.

Is LAB affiliated with AA, NA, Al-Anon, or other 12-step programs?
No, LAB is completely independent. While LAB draws inspiration from some structural elements of 12-step programs, it is not a recovery group. However, it can serve as a supplemental space for those in recovery or as an alternative for those who don’t fit into traditional support groups but still seek connection and personal growth.

Who is LAB for?
Anyone who has ever felt lonely, awkward, or bored—so basically, everyone at some point! LAB is for those who feel isolated, struggle to find meaningful social connections, or want a place to play, reflect, and grow. Whether you’re socially anxious, in a life transition, or just looking for something fulfilling to do, LAB is for you.

What happens at a LAB meeting?
LAB meetings follow a structured but flexible format that includes grounding exercises, group sharing, creative activities, and moments of reflection. Different types of meetings focus on different ways to engage—through discussion, art, movement, or shared experiences. Every meeting encourages connection, self-expression, and personal exploration.

Who runs LAB?
LAB is entirely peer-driven and grassroots. There are no leaders, only facilitators who ensure meetings stay structured and welcoming. Anyone can start a local LAB group using our framework. The central LAB team exists to provide resources and support but does not govern local meetings.

Can I start my own LAB group?
Absolutely! LAB is designed to be easily replicated anywhere. If you feel like your community needs a space like this, check out our Start a Group page for guidance on launching a local LAB meeting. You can also connect with LAB Central to share ideas and get support.

Do I have to commit to anything?
Nope! Come as often or as little as you’d like. There are no dues, no requirements, and no expectations—just a space for you to be yourself.

What’s the deal with pet rocks?
Instead of sobriety coins or chips, LAB uses pet rocks to acknowledge milestones, consistency, or just as a token of encouragement. You can earn them by attending meetings, progressing through the steps, or even just having a rough day and needing a little support. It’s a fun, tangible way to celebrate personal growth and connection.

How can I get involved beyond meetings?
There are many ways to engage! You can help organize local meetings, contribute to LAB Central (our online hub for resources and support), or simply spread the word. If you’re passionate about fostering connection and play in a disconnected world, we’d love to have you on board.
